Russia was able to pull off a coup of sorts by gaining a seat at the table of players monitoring OPEC commitments. That gives it a political advantage on the global stage as it seeks to extend its influence deep into Western territory. Oil is as much of a geopolitical tool as it is an economic one. Playing the game right will require some deft maneuvering at the Kremlin.
