In this new note by Nuclo Independent CIO head of global equities Claudio Brocado, we discuss the recent attempt by Elon Musk’s Tesla to (at least at the margin) influence Germany’s bureaucratic processes in order to finally obtain the necessary approvals for the gigafactory the company has substantially completed in the Berlin surroundings. Musk boldly — as is often the case with him — embarked on the ambitious project ahead of obtaining all the requisite building permits.

The gigafactory — which is an advanced stage of construction already in the town of Gruenheide in the state of Brandenburg, which engulfs the city-state and German capital, Berlin – will be the first major production site for Tesla in Europe. Brandenburg’s key state policy makers, as well as some leading figures in the Merkel federal government, have assured Musk that the necessary paperwork is forthcoming. Yet obstacles remain. Now the Tesla CEO is trying to accelerate the proceedings, but as is often the case with such moves, there is always a risk they may backfire. That is part and parcel of the concept of disruption.
